Social Media and London 2012

We submitted a short blog for The UK Sports Network this week with some social media predictions for 2012. Yamaha sweeps up

Yamaha sweeps up

Sport

At the end of a hectic week which saw a new Formula 1 World Champion in Jenson Button and a sixth consecutive World Rally crown for Sebastien Loeb, Yamaha continued their 2009 domination of motorcycle racing.

Ever since Casey Stoner took three races off in mid season to recover from his illness the MotoGP Championship has been destined to stay with Yamaha. After Portugal it really seemed there would be a fight down to the wire between Yamaha team mates Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, but two cool, calculated performances from the former and a mistake from the latter wrapped things up with one race remaining.

Things were tighter though in the world of Superbikes. After the utterly dominant performance of Leon Camier in British Superbikes, the World Championships in 1000cc Superbikes and 600cc Supersport would both go down to the wire against worthy title contenders from Ducati and Honda respectively. In the end a win and a fifth position would see Ben Spies take the World Superbike crown in his first year before his much anticipated move to MotoGP in 2010. It has been a stunning rookie year for the Spies and everyone is eager to see how he translates that performance in the MotoGP arena.

Meanwhile Cal Crutchlow only needed to finish fourth to secure the Supersport title from a hard charging Eugene Laverty. The performance of both of these riders in their first year after moving from British Superbikes and 250cc GP respectively is no less impressive than Spies. They have both taken the fight to some previously dominant teams and a gaggle of ex-World Champions and have come out on top. From their battles just 3 or 4 years ago in the British series, these two have staked their claim in the premier league. Just as with Spies in MotoGP it will be great to see Cal next year up against not only the rest of the World Superbike grid but his new team mate James Toseland in particular. Let’s just hope that Leon Camier joins the fray on the factory Aprilia!
