Social Media and London 2012

We submitted a short blog for The UK Sports Network this week with some social media predictions for 2012. Being Olympics year, and with a number of athletes on the Sine Qua Non books, including Zac Purchase and Paralympic athletes Charlotte Henshaw and Ollie Hynd, we looked at how the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the first true social media summer Games.

There was a flurry of Formula 1 and MotoGP activity on Monday as Ducati and Ferrari got their annual Wrooom event underway at the Madonna di Campiglio ski resort in Italy.

The event is an unapologetic celebration of Italian motorsport with both Philip Morris backed teams joining forces in a spectacular pre-season launch which yesterday saw the first pictures of Fernando Alonso in Ferrari red, the first appearance of Santander on the Scuderia’s sponsor portfolio and the welcome return of Felipe Massa.

Ducati has less to show off with former world champion Casey Stoner back for his fourth season with the team with American Nicky Hayden alongside him, but the team will be keen to re-assert themselves as championship favourites after a difficult campaign in 2009. Stoner will certainly be looking to avenge his critics after a 2009 season blighted by illness.

For both teams, though, it will be a season of re-acquaintance. Both Ferrari and Ducati have seen changes to their set-up. While two-time champion Alonso joins Ferrari, Michael Schumacher has made a much publicised move to Mercedes (nee Brawn). At Ducati, while the rider line-up remains unchanged, long-serving team boss Livio Suppo has moved to Honda, which will result in significant changes to the squad’s management.

As Ferrari gear up for the first Formula 1 race of the season in Bahrain in March, Ducati have a few weeks longer to prepare for their season-opener in Qatar. Felipe Massa goes well in Bahrain (he won in 2007 and 2008) while Stoner has remained undefeated in Qatar for the last three seasons, so there will no better place for both teams to get back to winning ways and to prove that they mean business in 2010.
