Tech market New Year kicks off at CES
Despite the media forecasts of troubled times for business and consumer spending, the technology industry has kicked off the New Year in buoyant mood at CES. There is still huge excitement around both 3D and tablets and all guns have come out firing in the latest salvos for the wars in each area. From prototype 3D headsets from Sony to new tablets and speculation about the predicted iPad2 there was a lot going on in terms of consumer products and the technology behind them. If last year was the year tablet computing really took off, many see that 2011 will be the year that sees the mainstream arrival of the convergence of TV’s and the internet. Sony, Intel Google and Logitech are already in the game and are looking to build on an early lead to stay ahead of a chasing pack that now includes Cisco.
Talking of convergence, another one to watch is the collision of technology and the car. It has been happening for a while in stages and already includes advanced infotainment and connectivity offerings from many manufacturers. But new deals announced by Nvidia with both BMW and Audi for 3D in-car systems based on the Tegra 2 graphics chip will only accelerate this convergence
Nvidia were also in the news elsewhere, along with UK embedded chip maker ARM. Nvidia are moving to provide single chip computing solutions based on ARM designs. This attempt to combat both Intel with Sandy Bridge and AMD/ATI by delivering a combined CPU and GPU was made even more significant when ARM announced and demonstrated a full version of Windows running on its chipset. The stock market certainly reacted positively to the news, so it will be interesting to see how the strategy pans out.
One final announcement that caught the eye was that from Victorinox, the makers of the famous Swiss Army knife which will now be available with a range of USB memory options, to ensure that it really does provide the tools that hardened travellers need!
