Rio 2016 adds to Brazil’s sporting creds

Rio 2016 adds to Brazil’s sporting creds

The Olympics has been firmly in the media spotlight over the last seven days with last week’s high profile appointment of Rio de Janeiro as host city for the 2016 games and today’s anticipated confirmation that golf and Rugby Sevens will be included on the roster for 2016.

Rio’s largely unexpected triumph over Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo to host the 2016 Olympics gives South America its first ever Games. Perhaps more importantly for the country’s economy and tourism, the IOC’s decision means that Brazil will be hosting the top three most watched sports around the globe throughout the next decade.

In addition to its annual Formula 1 race, the country will have the honour of holding the Football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics two years later. It is only the fourth time that a country has had the honour of consecutive World Cup and Olympics bestowed on them (Mexico, Germany and the USA are the other three).

According to the Rio2016 website, ‘Brazil's economy is now the tenth largest in the world - and predicted to be fifth by 2016.’ Align that to its increasing prominence on the international sporting stage and Brazil is set to emerge as a leading player in the sports business world over the coming seven years.
