Olympic ticket scramble
Sponsorship | Sport | Technology
In general the technology behind the Olympic ticket “lottery” website held up to the strain of the last minute scramble, although the deadline was extended by an hour to accommodate performance and connectivity issues in the final hours. As the site was being run by TicketMaster I assume it was not being managed by Olympic sponsors Atos Origin, so perhaps it is unlikely that we will see case studies as to how they used cloud computing to scale the site to cope with the anticipated demand - or not!
Of course the two issues now remain as to how many people will be disappointed and get fewer tickets than they requested and how many will blow their budget and get all or better tickets than they asked for.
Here at SQN Towers we have all applied for tickets to see our very own Zac Purchase in the final of the Men’s Lightweight Doubles Skulls. After cruising to victory in the UK trails a couple of weeks ago at the Olympic venue at Dorney Lakes, he remains unbeaten in the event in since 2005 and so has to be among the favourites to retain the Gold Medal he won in Beijing with partner Mark Hunter. With 20 million applications and events like rowing and cycling likely to proven popular, we will have to keep our fingers crossed that we will be there to cheer them both across the line in first place!
Zac was also on BBC Radio Berkshire again this morning talking about plans for the rest of this year including the World Championships in Slovenia where he will also be defending another Gold Medal, as well as the World Cup in windy Hamburg:

Zac is interviewed in the sports section about 31 minutes, 50 seconds in!
