Gadget Show iPhone app takes pole position

Gadget Show iPhone app takes pole position

TV presenter Suzi Perry demonstrated the full potency of the sport and technology fusion this week as her Biker Blast Off iPhone application accelerated to the top of the free app charts.

As part of a feature on this week’s popular Gadget Show programme, Suzi was pitted against her presenting colleague Jason Bradbury to design a free mobile phone app with the aim of securing the greatest number of downloads in the space of a month. Both Suzi and Jason opted for an iPhone app, joining the 65,000 applications already available to download from Apple’s App Store.

Jason’s took a practical approach which resulted in the Social Beacon app giving users the ability to create and post status updates for Facebook and Twitter without needing to type anything. Suzi opted for the gaming route and used her notoriety as a motorbike enthusiast and MotoGP presenter to create Biker Blast Off, a bike jumping game that requires dexterous use of the iPhone’s multitude of controls.

The fact that nine out of the ten most popular phone apps are game apps suggested from the start that Suzi would be the winner, but with a staggering 1.2 million downloads internationally in the one month timeframe exceeded even The Gadget Show’s expectations. Jason’s app was well received by the public but tallied just over 4,000 in the four-week period. Needless to say since the broadcast of Monday’s show both apps are adding to that figure on an hourly basis but Biker Blast Off is still sitting pretty at the top of the Free Apps chart, proving that the sport and tech combination are a powerful double act.
