Cisco speculates to collaborate

Cisco speculates to collaborate

Business | Technology

As talk of an end to the global recession continues, we are seeing more and more examples of the strong getting stronger as they reposition themselves for growth as the economy improves. First it was Oracle buying Sun Microsystems to bolster its software portfolio as well as opening up some interesting opportunities around integrated systems. Then in the last couple of weeks both Dell and Xerox have made strategic moves into the services environment. Dell is particularly interesting as it’s their first significant play in this area, making them the last of the major hardware vendor to move into services, albeit at a hefty price based on Perot’s $117M earnings.

Now we see Cisco continuing of the acquisition trail with a $3bn deal with Tandberg that should seal a dominant market position in the video conferencing and collaboration space, just in case there was any doubt previously. With a clear intention of leadership in each market they enter, the fruits of Cisco’s developments and acquisitions will become apparent over a period of time. Whether it’s entry into the computing space with UCS, consumer video with the net friendly Flip or consolidating a position in collaboration, Cisco have taken the opportunity in a tough economy to play a game of land grab that will leave others bemused.

So while Dell’s service purchase is an interesting change in direction, it is the ground breaking and potentially game changing moves made by the likes of Cisco, Oracle and EMC that will alter the landscape in technology markets for the years to come.
