Blogvent Day 8 - New ways to communic8

Blogvent Day 8 - New ways to communic8

Technology

Media regulators Ofcom last week published their fifth annual look at global communications and the results bode well for the future of mobile tech, particularly in the UK.

Ofcom’s report looks in depth at the landline, broadband, mobile, TV and radio use in 17 countries across Europe (UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Ireland), as well as the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Russia, India and China, with a comparative focus on the UK market.

The numbers related to mobile devices, internet and social networking use should not come as a surprise, although the UK market appears to more than open and willing to adopt new technologies if the Ofcom report is to be taken at face value.

The UK has shown a quickest uptake in smartphone use, registering a 70% increase in subscriptions in the twelve month period of the report from January 2009 to 2010. Only Italy and Spain have a higher number of smartphone users with Italy at 26 per 100 population, Spain at 21 per 100 population and the UK at 18 per 100 pop.

More than 37% of UK internet users claim to have accessed the internet on their mobile phone. Japan is the only country with a higher percentage, but significantly more at 70%, as a result of the early 3G roll out and historically high mobile internet levels, according to the report.

24% of UK mobile owners use their phones for social networking, the highest of all countries, while social networking continues to grow apace. Ofcom says that 62% of internet users in the UK use it for social networking sites, ahead of France (58%) but behind Italy (66%).

We have known for some time that smartphones are changing the way we, the public, are accessing and consuming information, so Ofcom’s report is a reinforcement rather than a revelation. For marketers and communicators, though, it is a timely reminder of the direction in which our industry is already heading.
