Blogvent Day 5 – Vettel’s Fifth Element

Blogvent Day 5 – Vettel’s Fifth Element

Sport

Formula One 2010 was one of the most exciting, talked about and closely-fought championships in history. But in the end it was the driver of car 5 who came out on top with five wins to his name.

Right up to the penultimate race of the year in Brazil there were five drivers in with a mathematical chance of taking the championship title, each poised to pounce should their rivals falter. Each of the contenders had made their individual mistakes at times during the season, some more high profile than others.

Similarly, each had taken impressive victories throughout the year, some with more controversy than others. Ultimately though, by the time the F1 circus reached Brazil, the top five drivers in the championship were the only ones who had demonstrated proven race winning performances in 2010.

With Jenson Button the only one of the five to drop out of contention after the Brazilian Grand Prix (after a highly commendable defence of his 2009 title it must be said), all eyes were on Abu Dhabi for the showdown.

Fernando Alonso with five wins to his name, Red Bull pair Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber on four apiece and Lewis Hamilton – with a significant points deficit – on three wins all vying for glory. Eventually, it came down the arguably the strongest, most trouble-free performance of the season for Vettel – to define the championship.

Taking an inspired fifth win of the season from pole position, the young German shone while his title rivals fell to the wayside, in turn becoming F1’s youngest ever champion, a title once held by two of his rivals for the 2010 title, Alonso (2005) and Hamilton (2008).

So for virtual door number 5 on our Blogvent calendar, let’s pay tribute to Sebastian ‘Mr. Pointy’ Vettel, 2010 Formula One World Champion.
