Blogvent Day 3: Internet devices forecast to top 3 billion by 2012

Blogvent Day 3: Internet devices forecast to top 3 billion by 2012

OK this isn’t news, but it’s still worth reminding ourselves every so often just in case we start taking it for granted. Market watchers IDC forecast that by 2012 over 3 billion devices will be connected to the internet, which is double the figure seen in 2008. These include PC’s, online gaming consoles and in particular mobile phones of various descriptions, which doubled in popularity from 2006 to 2008 and will double again to 1.5 billion by 2012.

People are still searching the Web and doing work or personal email, but they are now also playing online games, accessing financial and credit information, gambling, accessing business applications and interacting with others through online communities and blogs. By 2012 IDC estimates more than 1 billion buyers will be spending $1.2 trillion in business to consumer transactions. But that is dwarfed by the $12.4 trillion in business to business transactions.

The latest debate around the online is whether media companies should be charging for online access to news and content – as opposed to the more common but commercially challenging ‘free’ model typically found as the foundation for many internet-based businesses. Originally these media businesses anticipated that they would fund their internet presence and community through both online and offline advertising revenues. Online advertising is now in the region of $65 billion, about 10% of the total, but as it transpires the media industry has lost more than it has gained and so is now trying to charge user directly.

But all this misses the point that the internet acts as an enabler for a whole swath of new business models – from online retailing or gaming to the dissemination of news and information. Whether you are in business or sport or both, we all at a minimum need to track trends in the development of the internet and ideally try to innovate ahead of those trends.
