Blogvent Day 23: Michael Schumacher Returns
The wait is over. Michael Schumacher was announced today as a Mercedes GP driver for the 2010 Formula 1 season, confirming one of Formula 1’s most anticipated comebacks.
Since Jenson Button’s move to McLaren and Rubens Barrichello’s move to Williams, the rumours – or Schumours as we have come to call them at Sine Qua Non towers –have reached fever pitch.
Schumacher’s return is the culmination of a huge turnaround in fortunes for the team formerly known as Brawn GP who didn’t exist twelve months ago but went on to win the world championship against all odds with Button and Barrichello at the helm of cars 22 and 23.
Schumacher’s sensational return sees him partner compatriot Nico Rosberg and will see the formation of an effective Team Germany in the world championship. Today’s news will come as an early Christmas present for the majority of F1 fans around the world but especially for everyone at RTL – Germany’s F1 broadcaster who have seen a steady decline in its audience since Michael retired at the end of 2006.
Bahrain 2010 will be Michael Schuamacher’s 250th Grand Prix start in an illustrious career that has seen the German take seven championship titles, 91 wins and 68 pole positions. On 22 occasions since his race debut for Jordan in 1991, Schumacher has secured the impressive triple - pole position, race win and fastest race lap. Even approaching the age of 41, no-one would bet against Schumacher making that 23 next season.
The 2010 season will see four world champions line up on the grid with Schumacher, Alonso, Hamilton and reigning champ Button. With such an abundance of talent, Formula 1 will be an attractive proposition for teams, fans and sponsors in 2010.
