Blogvent Day 15 – 15th time lucky for McCoy

Blogvent Day 15 – 15th time lucky for McCoy

Sport

The prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards takes place at the LG Arena in Birmingham this Sunday and there is one man who is currently odds on favourite to take the title – horse racing jockey Tony McCoy.

15-time champion jockey McCoy won the UK’s most beloved race The Grand National for the first time back in April riding Don’t Push It, arguably the icing on a very illustrious career which has seen the Northern Irishman ride over 3,000 winners.

The Grand National win was one of very few feats that McCoy had not achieved at the start of this year but he did just that on 10 April, on his 15th attempt, and set himself up to become the first horse racing personality to pick up the Beeb trophy in its 56-year history.

If he does triumph, as the bookies expect, it will add to his host of racing accomplishments, as well as the OBE which he was given for The Queen’s Birthday Honours in the summer (for services to horse racing) and to last week’s Sportsman of the Year accolade at the British Sports Awards, as voted by the Sports Journalists Association.

With that sort of momentum behind him, perhaps McCoy can afford to push it a bit in Birmingham this weekend.
