Blogvent Day 14 - Twitter trends expands into 14 new countries

Twitter’s trending topics have already established themselves as a reliable barometer of a subject’s popularity in real time, but the micro-blogging site has recently enhanced the scope of its service by adding 14 new countries to its trending service.

The country-specific trend searches now cover 20 nations with the addition of Argentina, Australia, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Turkey and Venezuela.

Chile has already received substantial references on Twitter throughout 2010 following the international coverage of the Chilean Miners rescue, helping it to number 5 in the News Trends of the year, as recently announced by Twitter in its “Year In Review”: http://yearinreview.twitter.com/trends/

Digesting each of the staggering 25 billion tweets sent during 2010, the top ten trends overall covered an eclectic mix of news, sport, entertainment, technology, celebrity and oddity.

The top trend of the year was, perhaps unsurprisingly an international news item - the Gulf Oil Spill. Sport came in second with the FIFA World Cup, while the Leonardo di Caprio film Inception resonated highly in the public’s imagination during 2010 to take third place.

The Apple iPad was the top tech story of the year in sixth place - behind the Haiti earthquake and Vuvuzelas, but crucially ahead of its nearest tech rival on Twitter, Google Android.

Justin Bieber, Harry Potter and Paul the Octopus made an unlikely trio rounding out the top ten.

"The list of 2010 Twitter trends reflects what's happening in our world, demonstrates the power of turning any event or story into a shared experience and underscores Twitter's value as a real-time information network," the social media site said in a blog post.
