Blogvent Day 1: Staying at Number 1

Blogvent Day 1: Staying at Number 1

It’s a tough world out there and whether you play tennis or sell computers, getting to the top rung of the ladder is a big challenge. There are plenty of hungry competitors out there after the same piece of turf and as Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems used to say, it’s a question of “eat lunch or be lunch”.

In the sporting world we have seen many examples of people losing their crown which has spurred them on to raise their game to new heights to claim it back. After an incredible 237 weeks at the helm of international tennis, Roger Federer got deposed by Rafael Nadal in 2008. In 2009, he not only claimed back the position and finished the year as number one at the Barclays ATP Tour Finals in London, but he also completed his career grand slam and, by winning Wimbledon again, he set a new benchmark for the most grand slam titles. And few would bet against him adding several more to that in the coming years despite the chasing pack with the likes of Djokovic, Murray and Del Potro.

Valentino Rossi also had a good year in MotoGP, capturing his seventh premier class championship in the face of tough competition, particularly from his Fiat Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo, but also fending off Ducati rider Casey Stoner and Honda’s Dani Pedrosa. Again those three protagonists will be chasing him very hard again next year, but that is only sure to drive Rossi to even greater levels.

In business the situation is not dissimilar. Acer has deposed HP from the top PC maker slot in Europe, while Dell has lost much of its previous lustre. But Michael Dell is back at the helm to implement an new strategic direction for the business, and we wouldn’t imagine that Mark Hurd at HP has given up on the market leader position. But just as with sport, the landscape and competitive environment is changing, requiring both leaders and those who aspire to the top spot to innovate, improve and raise their game.
